In the next clearing Mr Parkinson and Jim Drake were quarrelling â those two who had been best of friends for years past.
âSam, you canât be serious!â Jim was holding nothing back. âIn another day theyâll be all over the plain. We eluded them so cleverly that theyâre bound to search all the harder. Weâve got to get away to Nelson overland before they bar our way.â
âAnd leave all our things behind? We canât afford that.â
âCaptain Wakefield said heâd make up for any losses,â said Jim.
âWhat, if we walk off empty-handed? We canât claim anything unless we do our best. And thereâs my boat on the river by the old station. Youâre forgetting that.â
âYou were stupid to leave it there, and the other gear.â
âWe only left broken axes, a few clothes and a half barrel of salt beef,â responded Sam Parkinson.
âAnd two guns.â
âOld muskets not fit to shoot a bird and no ammunition left.â
âIf the MÄori get them, they might have the ammunition. How will you explain that to Captain Wakefield? Weâre in a mess whatever we do, Sam. We should stow our gear and go.â
âStow the talk, Jim, and let me think.
âItâs high time you did.â Jim Drake crashed angrily away through the manuka. When a few minutes later Mr Parkinson came over to the labourers, the result of his thinking amazed them.
âIâm going to the old station by the Wairau,â he said. âWhoâll come with me?â
âIâm game, Sir!â Gibby had had enough of sitting shivering in a blanket, feeling cramped and closed in. The others were not swept in so quickly.
âBut you said to keep away from there!â
âWhatâs the caper?â
âDâyou mean to walk straight in among the MÄori?â
âI only want to collect some gear,â said Mr Parkinson. âWe left a couple of axes.â
âBlunt ones with broken handles.â
âWe can fix the handles. Weâll take care how we approach. If the MÄori are there we wonât go in.â
âCreep up on them like?â said Peter Crow mischievously. âAll right, Iâll give that a try.â
âIâm game to play, if Iâm allowed to creep away,â added Harry.
âIs that a yes or no?â demanded Mr Parkinson, who didnât enjoy Harryâs off-hand rhymes.
âYes. Iâm all for a bit of fun.â
âIâll gang along,â said Will, thinking not of fun but of Gibby.
âThe first three volunteers will be enough,â said Mr Parkinson. âGibby and Richardson and Crow.â
And Will knew from the way Sam Parkinson spoke that even now, when anything might happen, their master would not take a man who might have a better idea what to do than he had himself. Nothing was said about the real reason for going: the guns.
Will smelt danger. As soon as theyâd gone he began to fret about Gibby. True, the lad would do as well as any in a crisis; but he ought to have Will at his back.
However, Mr Parkinson was being cautious. As they neared the Pine Grove he made the four of them scatter just far enough to pass on a warning at any sign of MÄori.
